Jaysh al-Izza Statement on Prisoner Swap with Syrian Government
Jaysh al-Izza (‘Army of Glory’) is an insurgent faction with origins in the town of al-Latamina in north Hama countryside, which is presently controlled by the Syrian government. Jaysh al-Izza is the most notable ‘Free Syrian Army’-brand faction remaining in Syria that is outside the framework of larger Turkish-backed coalitions (namely, the three corps of the ‘Syrian National Army’ that control north Aleppo countryside and a strip from Tel Abyad to Ras al-Ayn, and the ‘National Front for Liberation’ that operates in Idlib and its environs). The faction has issued a recent statement on a prisoner swap conducted via negotiations through intermediaries with the Syrian government. This prisoner swap appears to have involved engagement with Iran and Russia as well, as Jaysh al-Izza claims one of those it released is the body of a dead Iranian officer who was killed in fighting in 2017. The full statement is featured below with my translation.
